holo eclipse with diffraction grating! 🌈🌙☀️💥✨
I decided to sacrifice an old camera for the eclipse and see and capture everything through the camera screen. I guess the clouds in Monterrey acted as a filter, preventing my sensor from burning out 🙈 lol

still missing you

synopsis: things aren't quite the same for satoru after being unsealed
pairing: satoru gojo x gn!reader
themes/content: jjk manga spoilers. angst. death/loss.
a/n: saw a tiktok that made me cry so here's this lmao sorry :)

satoru had been having more nightmares recently.
the troubling part wasn’t even the dreams themselves, per se - it was how real they felt. it made it harder and harder for him to tell waking memories from sleep, like every moment he was underwater, sinking farther and farther from the light above. it was too dark, too slow.
you know when you’re in a dream and you open your mouth to scream but no sound comes out? that’s how it felt all the time now, like his vocal cords lost their ability to function, no air leaving his lungs. his chest would rise and fall, the space between his ribs expanding and collapsing, but it was no use.
he discovered his newfound reticence when he tried to speak to itadori, or rather, itadori tried to speak to him. “gojo-sensei!” yuji’s voice called from…somewhere. satoru could hear him but couldn’t quite see him, every sense still far away, like light diffracted around the corners, blurring it. he tried to call out to him, to tell him he was okay, but when his lips parted he was met with stifling silence bouncing across the brick walls. was he back at school? no, that can’t be right…he was just in the prison realm, wasn’t he? but where were you?
oh, right.
and just like that, the memories came flooding back - or rather, memories of memories. he hadn’t been there during your fight with sukuna, but he had been informed by the higher ups. he was grateful they at least waited until he was unsealed to have your funeral. that day didn’t quite feel real, either. looking down at his hands, he remembers there were raindrops falling on his open palms. but wait, it wasn’t raining that day, was it?
oh well.
every time he thought about it, it felt like he was drowning. he couldn’t breathe, couldn’t think, his body thrashing in a desperate attempt to find the surface, but it was always futile. it wouldn’t bring you back. it wouldn’t stop the nightmares.
the worst dream was the one where he was cold. snowflakes fell and landed on his skin, burning as they melted. the sky above was bright white, and he could never seem to shift his gaze from it. it was blinding. there’s a metallic taste in his mouth, one he’d be naive to not recognize as blood. despite being trapped on his back, the clear signs of fatal injuries, it didn’t even hurt, not in the physical sense. he could tell something was wrong with his body, something that prevented him from moving, but he couldn’t feel the pain of it anymore. he just knew he let you down. he let them all down.
the hallways at school felt empty now. where was everyone? megumi should be here, and nobara. nanami should be back by now, right? it was too quiet for satoru, like he could taste the silence; it was bitter.
he began to dread sleep. he never was one for caffeine, but he started brewing his black tea stronger, drinking it later and later in the hopes it would stave off his fatigue for a few extra hours. you liked this tea - he remembers the day you picked it out. the way you held the tin to your nose, your lips tugging into a smile as you breathed in the earthy aroma. as it lands on his tongue, all he feels is the scalding heat burning his throat. would you like him to make you a cup?
tonight, his dream is different. it’s not winter here, but spring: wildflowers bloom around him, the sun bright but warm. he can feel it on his skin, turning his cheeks pink. his uniform is loose on his body, cloth hanging from his bones; he’s young again: the ache gone from his muscles, calluses erased from his hands, wrinkles around his eyes smoothed. leaning back, he rests upon the ground, the grass tickling his neck. here he can move, turning his head to observe the trees surrounding him. their leaves are bright green, undoubtedly alive.
for a moment, his eyes flutter closed - suddenly, he’s back in the hospital, the bright fluorescent lights buzzing above him. his head hurts.
no.
opening them urgently, he’s back in the clearing, birds chirping softly. ah yes, much better. there are clouds overhead, fluffy and soft against the blue backdrop.
“that one looks like a heart, don’t you think?”
his body jolts, head turning to the side as his cheek presses into the dirt. before he realizes it, a grin forms across his features (he was worried he had forgotten how to use the muscles required to do so; he’s glad that’s not the case).
you.
you’re here, laying in the grass, eyes lazily scanning the sky above. your arm extends upwards to point overhead. “see? and that one looks like a mushroom!”
he doesn’t dare to move his gaze, afraid that if he looks away for a moment, you’ll leave him again. he hums, “yeah, it does.”
you giggle - oh, how he missed that sound. for once, it doesn’t feel hazy, the sound ringing through the stillness. his senses return, but it’s not overstimulating like he would have expected, but just the right amount of clarity, like a glimpse into the bottom of the sea through clear waters. the breeze smells nice here, like your shampoo. it’s not too warm, either. as he inhales, he feels the air in his lungs.
satoru doesn’t mind this dream.

Stargate of Diffraction
Returning to the ideas and concepts of my oldest physics-inspired art - diffraction curves!
Diffraction of white light into rainbow colors gives me a chance to create something abstract that is close to what you you see. Something that shows both the beauty of the phenomenon and the beauty of the underlying math.
Intensity of diffracted light (of spectral colors) versus the position on the screen where the light would be captured (The left and right sides correspond to a diffraction angle of 75°)
I am overlaying sets of curves for a single slit and diffraction gratings with 2,3, or 4 slits. The single slit curve is enveloping them all.
The width and distance of the slits is changing periodically, width and distance with different frequencies. I get close to where the distance is just a little bit larger than the width.
Created with WebGL as a fragment shader - first time I created lines based on really calculating the normal distance from the direction of the line.

I bought this crystal at a yard sale thing, and the woman I bought it from wasn't sure of what it was, but from looking at it, I thought that it was between angel aura quartz or natural rainbow quartz (not lab-grown, if that does exist) and I just wanted to request a side by side comparison and ways to tell them apart. Thanks so much!
Hi there! Here are some comparison photos. (please click photos to see more detail) Crystals with internal fractures/sutured overgrowth. Naturally occurring due to heat, and pressure but can also be caused by humans (dropped during shipping, damaged during exhumation, intentionally heated then rapidly cooled, ect). Sometimes can only be seen from a specific angle.
Sources: Left | Right
Angel Aura (Quartz crystals with titanium and gold in a process called chemical vapour deposition or CVD). Usually the entire crystal is coated and the iridescence can be seen from any angle. Certain coatings can be removed with strong acid or sand blasting.

Sources: Left | Right

Naturally iridescent quartz can also be caused by the reflection and refraction on extremely thin parallel Brazil-law twinning lamellae or periodic etching of defects on z faces, resulting in a diffraction grating. The iridescence can be seen on specific faces and not the entire mineral.
Sources: Left | Right
Hope this helps and if anyone has more insight please leave a comment. Thanks!

My professor joked that our eyes have a diffraction grating inside them and my friend believed him. The look of pure horror on his face when he realised that they thought he was serious. The instant regret. For clarification, this is an advanced optics course. He taught us the first optics course also. We discussed how the eye's lens works. He just realised how quickly we can forget information today.

The Classic 60s Bait & Switch -- X-Ray Specs!
X-ray specs or X-ray glasses are an American novelty item, purported to allow users to see through or into solid objects. In reality, the spectacles merely create an optical illusion; no X-rays are involved. The current paper version is sold under the name "X-Ray Spex"; a similar product is sold under the name "X-Ray Gogs".
X-Ray Specs consist of an over-sized pair of spectacles with plastic or cardboard frames and white cardboard "lenses" printed with concentric red circles, and emblazoned with the legend "X-RAY VISION".
The "lenses" consist of two layers of thin cardboard with a small hole about a quarter-inch (6 millimeters) in diameter punched through both layers. The user views objects through the holes. In the original version, a feather is embedded between the layers of each lens. The vanes of the feathers are so close together that light is diffracted, causing the user to receive two slightly offset images. For instance, if viewing a pencil, one would see two offset images of the pencil. Where the images overlap, a darker image is obtained, giving the illusion that one is seeing the graphite embedded within the body of the pencil. Newer versions utilize manufactured diffraction lenses instead of feathers.
X-Ray Specs were long advertised with the slogan "See the bones in your hand, see through clothes!" Some versions of the advertisement featured an illustration of a young man using the X-Ray Specs to examine the bones in his hand while a voluptuous woman stood in the background, as though awaiting her turn to be "X-rayed". These claims, however, were untrue. In smaller print below the X-ray claims, advertisements and packaging state that X-Ray Specs operate by "illusion".
Part of the novelty value lies in provoking the object of the wearer's attentions. These subjects may believe that the device does allow the wearer to compromise their modesty, so are liable to respond with a variety of amusing reactions. Indeed, instructions with the packaging explain how to provoke such reactions, to "CONVINCE the gals that your X-Ray Spex are for real!"
The principle behind the illusion, as well as its use in a pair of "spectacles", was first patented (in the United States) in 1906 by George W. Macdonald (U.S. Patent 839,016). A tubular configuration employing the same principle as well as the use of a feather for the diffraction grating was first patented in 1909 by Fred J. Wiedenbeck (U.S. Patent 914,904)[citation needed]
X-Ray Specs were improved (U.S. Patent 3,592,533) by Harold von Braunhut, also the inventor of Amazing Sea-Monkeys.[4]
A previous product called the Wonder Tube worked similarly. Instead of glasses, the device was in the form of a small telescope.
Their name was used as the inspiration for the UK punk band X-Ray Spex.

Coolest animal
I fucking love this question because there's just no way to have a single answer
Animal that inspires a lot of fond feelings: bunnies
Animal that has a cool fact: blue morpho butterflies because their coloration is a consequence of diffraction gratings on the wings

Inverted Atoll
Applying my 'quadrant scheme' to inverted diffraction art!
Four different viewing angles - looking at the same virtual 3D structure built from diffraction curves!
Created with javascript, based on threejs, no AI.
In the center of the structure is a hypothetical diffraction grating with 4 slits, 330 nanometers wide, 4500 nanometers apart - sort of reasonable parameters from the perspective of physics. Beams of white light hit the slits, light is diffracted into pure spectral colors. 200 lines, walking through the spectrum of colors in 200 steps.
This was the physics part, now the art part :-)
- I am inverting the pure spectral colors. Probably an alien from a foreign galaxy would see the colors like this. - I do not simulate the diffraction patterns as you would see them - just blurry stripes of colors. But I take the mathematical curves that describe these stripes. What fascinates me is that optics and diffraction is one of the few fields in physics where vibrant colors also make sense and are "correct" and not only an arbitrary choice for visualization. Showing a peak where the center of a stripe would be in an experiments makes the artistic representation similar to the natural phenomenon but not exactly the same. - I look at the structure from different angles and at different distances. Like a space probe exploring a weird, colorful anomaly in space :-) - I like the Moire effects and irregularities, maybe even potential "rendering errors" when overlapping the lines. - It is an "atoll" - I completed the circle, so white light would hit the grating from two directions, 180° apart.
